Dr. Mundis was born in Springfield, MO and, as part of a missionary family, at the age of 2 moved to Vienna, Austria alongside his older sister and parents. His time oversees culminated with a trip to India where his desire to become a physician was birthed. After completing his undergraduate and medical school training in Missouri, he completed an orthopedic residency in Oklahoma and was accepted into the prestigious San Diego Spine Fellowship (website) for additional training in Spine surgery. He also received sub-specialty training with Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia in scoliosis, kyphosis, and complex reconstruction in both children and adults.

His passion for spine surgery is focused in treating scoliosis and spinal deformities. He is part of an elite group of internationally recognized spine surgeons that conduct high profile research called the International Spine Study Group (ISSG). As a result of these efforts and those at SDCSD, Dr. Mundis has had the opportunity to publish 4 book chapters, 9 peer reviewed articles, and has over 60 presentations at national and international meetings focused on the advancement in treating scoliosis and spinal deformity. His current research interests include applying minimally invasive spine surgery to deformity correction, and outcomes based research focused on cost effectiveness.

Dr. Mundis not only has a busy practice focused on treating scoliosis and spinal deformity but also finds the time to invest in other important aspects of spine surgery. He is an avid educator, recently named co-director of the prestigious San Diego Spine Fellowship (website) dedicated to teaching the next generation of spine surgeons. Furthermore he teaches on a monthly basis educating his peer spine surgeons, engineers, students, and other healthcare professionals on advancements in technology, basics of deformity surgery and improvement in healthcare delivery. He is also part of development teams for two separate implant companies, with the hopes of making the next generation of implants better than the last.

The missionary lifestyle and initial calling into spine surgery in Calcutta, India has also burned a deep desire to give back. As such Dr. Mundis makes it a point to go on yearly trips oversees to educate local surgeons on spinal deformities and to perform surgeries on children who otherwise would succumb to their spinal deformity. He has spent time in Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and most recently in Cyprus and Israel. This is perhaps the most gratifying part of his practice and he is currently working with the NuVasive Spine Foundation (website) to establish a lasting presence at a large hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He has recently joined the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery to establish a spine deformity program alongside Dr. Akbarnia to help serve the international community that seeks American physicians to treat their spinal deformity.

Despite his dedication to his patients, education, research and development, and humanitarian efforts nothing compares to his love and dedication to his wife Lesley and their four children. They have fully integrated into the San Diego community and consider themselves Californians. Lesley, trained as a physician assistant, has found her passion outside of medicine as the children’s director at Elevate Church. They share a common vision to see children cared for both physically and spiritually and look forward to joining efforts oversees.
